Making the decision to seek help is a brave first step. Counselling should witness your pain, provide a safe space to express your experiences and guide you, through a process, to explore what is happening to you. Through time counselling may bring you closer to your healing, in a way that helps you feel better about yourself and the experiences you have been through.

Sessions are 50 minutes and take place over zoom video calling technology. To make a booking, you must join as a TCB member and pay for your session in advance. This is all part of an easy to use automated service within the TCB private members area.

Counselling will help you develop new skills and the understanding to find solutions and approaches that eventually embrace the proudest version of yourself. Integrated Counselling is for people ready to make active changes to their lives. If this is you then, The Counsellor Blou looks forward to hearing from you.

When choosing a counsellor, you want to know you are paying for someone who has appropriate training and qualifications with professional credentials. This should ensure you receive a high standard of ethical counselling based on your needs.

  • Know what you want
  • Trust your instincts
  • Do your research (i.e)
    • a. Are they qualified
    • b. Are they registered
    • c. Are they insured

Know What You Want

Are you looking to fix a behaviour you don’t like, get over a trauma or talk things through? There can be a big difference between therapy that provides a safe space simply to talk and therapy that’s more proactive to help you find solutions and resolve the things preventing you from leading your own path to self improvement.

You don’t have to know your goals, but you do need to know if you are ready to change.

Trust Your Instincts

What do you need to feel safe? What experience would you like people to have? If somone’s profile doesn’t feel right to you, that’s ok, go with your instincts and move on until someone stands out.

All counsellors should aim to create a trusting interpersonal rapport with you, based on your explanations of your experiences and what you describe as your issues and your needs. This should feel caring, respectful and with positive regard to your ability to work through change. If you feel this is not the case, its ok to say you don’t feel you are a match and keep looking.

Also consider if the following things matter to you to be able to be honest with a professional about your feelings and experiences;

  • Gender
  • Religion
  • Cultural background
  • Race and origin
  • Age

Do Your Research

Professional psychotherapists / counsellors will be registered with a validated agency (such as BACP, ACTO, COSCA) as this provides them with their governance structure to ensure they meet professional standards of ethical practice and conduct.

It is ok to ask for proof of qualifications, registration and insurance if this cannot be found on their website, email signatures or on the agency directory they link to their practice.

If someone is not qualified, registered or insured, you run the risk of no liability if they were to cause you harm or distress.
